Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South leaders Hayes & Yeading United were held
to a 1-1 draw at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday, and with Farnborough’s game being off,
Metropolitan Police roared back into contention with an excellent 4-0 win at Yate Town.
At the Optima Stadium, a crowd of 749 saw an even game with defences holding firm.
And it wasn’t until six minutes from time that the deadlock was broken, and it was the play-off chasing
Seagulls who did it through a Scott Laird header from a free-kick.
But as stoppage time approached, Cole Brown was brought down in the box and Moses Emmanuel
rescued Hayes & Yeading from the penalty spot.
At Lodge Road, Liam Ferdinand gave the Met a 22nd-minute lead which Ollie Knight doubled seven
minutes before the break.
Yate, like Weston, chasing a top-five spot, conceded a third in the 77th minute with a second for
Ferdinand and three minutes from time, Ferdinand completed his hat-trick when he converted a penalty
to inflict Yate’s heaviest defeat of the season to date.
Fourth-placed Taunton Town lost ground when they suffered a 3-2 defeat at Harrow Borough.
Harrow had suffered four successive defeats heading into this game, so the Peacocks would have
fancied their chances. And when Toby Holmes after 24 minutes and Jacob Wannell seven minutes later
gave them a 2-0 lead, it looked like being a win for the visitors. But Leo Donnellan pulled one back six
minutes after the break and then top marksman James Ewington took centre stage, equalising on 75
minutes and then heading the winner eight minutes from time.
An extraordinary 7-2 hammering for Gosport Borough and Chesham United’s slightly more hard-
earned 1-0 win at struggling Hartley Wintney saw the teams swap places in the table, with the
Generals now in the final play-off spot.
At Holloways Park, Gosport had Luke Hallett sent-off for a second bookable offence in the 71st minute.
However, they were already 3-1 down at that stage after a brace from top scorer Nathan Minhas after
22 and 30 minutes and Scott Donnelly a minute before the break, with Harry Kavanagh replying on the
hour-mark. Olly McCoy made it 4-1 just three minutes after Hallett’s dismissal and the same player made
it a nap hand five minutes later. Kaine Kennedy-Sinclair added number six in the 78th minute and McCoy
completed his hat-trick six minutes from time, with Matt Paterson pulling a second back for Boro in time
added on.
At The Memorial Playing Field, Hartley Wintney are now only three points above third-from-bottom
Dorchester Town after losing to Chesham. What turned out to be the only goal of the game came
after 13 minutes when a long, high ball bounced over Row keeper Luke Williams and Kylian Kouassi
rolled the ball into an empty net. Williams made amends though after 28 minutes when he saved Brad
Clayton`s penalty.
But they were unable to find a leveller and Chesham moved back into the top five.
Poole Town are back in play-off contention after also winning 1-0 at the Black Gold Stadium against
mid-table Walton Casuals. A Will Spetch header after 15 minutes eventually proved enough against a
Stags side who made the Dolphins work hard for the win.
At the bottom end of the table, second-from-bottom Wimborne Town suffered a 4-0 defeat in a
relegation ‘six-pointer’ at Kings Langley, who are 19th, a point in front of Dorchester and now 14 ahead
of Wimborne, who do possess five games in hand, however. Kings Langley were given the boost of
an early 4th-minute penalty which Jamie Jellis duly converted. Shaq Forde then doubled the home
side`s lead 6 minutes later. But it wasn’t until 14 minutes from time that they managed to really kill off
the Magpies with a third from Arel Amu. And Amu wrapped up an important win with his second in the
87th minute.
Wimborne’s neighbours and fellow strugglers Dorchester picked up a massive three points with a 2-1
Avenue Stadium win against Swindon Supermarine. The hosts took a 26th-minute lead when Alfie
Stanley fired home at the far post. It was 11 minutes into the second half when Dorchester managed
to add a second when Stanley converted a penalty after Manny Odubade was brought down in the box.
Glenn Howes’ side, who hadn’t won in ten going into this game, conceded a stoppage-time Harry
Williams goal, but held on for three crucial points.
Salisbury ended a four-game winless run with a best-of-five goal win at Hendon. New boy Frank Keita
gave the Greens a 12th-minute lead but goals either side of half-time from Josh Sommerton and
Aldershot Town loanee Josh Fawole took Steve Claridge’s side into the lead. Devon Arnold made it 3-1
in the 77th minute, but Eren Kinali’s goal two minutes into stoppage time made the visitors sweat a little.
