Match Report
Mousehole 3 Ashton & Backwell Utd 0
It was our second trip to the most southerly point of the Toolstation
league, down in deepest Cornwall. Our first adventure was aborted in
November due to a waterlogged pitch, having done 150 miles of 185
mile trip that one turned into rather a boozy afternoon.
Such a long journey and a 3-0 score line doesn’t tell the whole story, 2-1
to the championship favourites was perhaps a little fairer to the
travelling Stags. The hosts have a clearly defined pattern of play and
they are very good at it and it’s our job to work hard, press and disrupt.
However, within 5 minutes, Joe Cattermole had a great opportunity to
give us an early lead following a great cross from Zac Ford, but Catts
header was saved. Mousehole then settled into their possession based
game, putting Tom Roberts’s goal under pressure, with important
blocks, particularly from Bish and Pressy.
Eventually, this pressure told with Mousehole taking a two-goal lead into
half-time. A re-occurring theme in the 29th and 36th minutes with
Callum McOnie and then Hayden Turner, cutting in from wide areas, not
marked closely enough, and fullbacks slipping over in important
moments, burying their well struck shots into the corner of the net. H/t
2-0
A couple of early second-half substitutions by Beech, influenced the
game as he introduced Miles Hardidge and Kitan. Both made an
immediate impact on the game and put the Hosts on the back foot for
the first time in the afternoon.
Charlie Saunders had a goal bound shot, blocked by Bell, then a good
accurate clearance from Ford put Kitan away. His express pace took him
way from the home defence, but their keeper was equal, as he was
quick off the line to make good save. From the subsequent corner, a
goalmouth scramble ensued, our first shot came back off the post,
follow-up shot was cleared off the line. That was our best moments to
get back into the game. We continue to attack as Tom Press had a
header just clear the crossbar and Kitan curled a cross from wide left,
which forced the keeper into another good save. In the dying moments
of injury time, Frazer broke away down the right flank, put a good, low,
cross to find substitute Josh Bassett, who made no mistake from 10
yards to give his side, a rather flattering 3 goal victory.
