League Review
Tiverton Town still lead the early Pitching In Southern Football League Premier
Division South table after Saturday`s round of matches, despite suffering their first defeat
of 2020/21. And it was a Dorchester Town side winning for the first time this season in
the league to date who inflicted defeat on the Yellows. A goal four minutes from time from
sub Kpama Ngoy sealed victory for the Magpies.
Chesham United and Hartley Wintney also suffered their first defeats of the 2020/21
campaign on Saturday. The Generals were beaten at the Meadow also by a single goal
scored for Swindon Supermarine by Conor McDonagh on the hour-mark. The Row suffered
a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the Silver Jubilee Stadium by a Hendon side winning for the
second time in five games. Joe White bagged a brace for the Greens after three and 24
minutes to put the hosts in control. Five minutes into the second half Toby Byron made it 3-
0 and Jayden Clarke made it game over with a fourth just three minutes later. The defeat
leaves Hartley Wintney with three draws and a defeat from their four games and still looking
for a first win.
That leaves just Poole Town, Taunton Town and Salisbury protecting unbeaten starts.
Salisbury and Poole faced each other at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium and it looked as
though the Dolphins were heading towards maintaining their unbeaten start with a win as
they led 2-0 by the 35th minute, courtesy of a 7th minute Jamie Whisken effort and a 35th
minute penalty won by Tony Lee after he had been taken down by Bristol Rovers loanee Liam
Armstrong in the box and converted by the victim. However, Harry Baker reduced the deficit
in the 67th minute and then the Whites earned a share of the spoils with an 88th minute
leveller from Marvin Brooks.
Taunton made it two wins and two draws from four games with a 1-0 success at the Easy
as HGV Stadium against Farnborough, who have still yet to find a win. The Peacocks sealed
victory, courtesy of a 72nd-minute goal from Owen Howe.
Harrow Borough and Beaconsfield Town are the other two teams still looking for that
elusive first three-point haul of 2020/21.
Harrow at least got themselves off the nil-point mark after sharing a 1-1 Earlsmead draw
with Weston-super-Mare. George Moore gave Boro a 17th-minute lead which Mick
McCootie levelled seven minutes later. Beaconsfield picked up a second draw after an
uninspiring 0-0 draw with Hayes & Yeading United at Holloways Park.
Truro City moved up to second spot with a third win from five games against Yate Town
at Treyew Road. Goals from Jamie Richards after just five minutes and Alex Battle six
minutes from time saw the White Tigers return to winning ways after their midweek defeat.
Metropolitan Police recorded their second win of the campaign to date at Imber Court
against Gosport Borough, who were losing for a second time. Jack Mazzone gave the Met
an 11th-minute lead that new loan signing from Aldershot Town, Ben Schroll, doubled right
on the stroke of half-time. Dan Wooden reduced the deficit five minutes after the restart,
only for Mazzone to bag his second and the Met`s third 13 minutes from time to seal victory.
Basingstoke Town, who were second-from-bottom when lockdown occurred and the
2019/20 season eventually declared null and void, moved to the top of the Pitching In
Southern Football League Division One South on Saturday and are now the only team
yet to taste defeat in 2020/21.
It`s been a remarkable turnaround for Dan Brownlie`s side as they made it four wins and a
draw from their five matches after a 6-3 win at the Causeway Ground against Cinderford
Town. The visitors found themselves 3-1 ahead at half-time, thanks to goals from Brad
Wilson after 22 minutes, Ben Cook 10 minutes later and Dylan Ive a minute before the
break, with Lewis Spurrier replying on 41 minutes. However, the Foresters were a little
unfortunate as they found `Stoke goalkeeper Julian Schwarzer in terrific form, otherwise the
scoreline could have looked a lot different. But a quickfire brace from Wilson to complete his
hat-trick shortly after half-time made it 5-1, although Spurrier again in the 75th minute and
Will Gibbons two minutes later gave Cinderford hope, until George Hallahan`s penalty as
stoppage time ticked in sealed victory for the visitors.
Saturday saw first defeats of the new campaign for Cirencester Town, Winchester City
and Frome Town.
