Portishead Town enjoyed a great FA Cup run last season which took them to the First Round
Proper and this Sunday, Cheltenham Town stand in the way of them repeating the feat.
The South West League side defeated Sherborne Town 2-0 in the last round and captain
Taylor Gainey told Women’s Soccer Scene that her team are focused and ready to take on
higher league opponents: “As a squad, we are naturally well drilled, but preparation always
starts once the previous game has finished. We prepare physically as well as mentally, getting
in the right frame of mind is detrimental to our performance. We have great cohesion amongst
the squad and if we continue playing the way we have started the season, we will remain
untouchable.
“It was a great performance [against Sherborne] and that's what gained us the result.
We were calm and patient, we created plenty of chances; we didn't capitalise on all of them but
I'm confident if we continue to play the way we have been, the results will reflect. I'm proud of
my squad, and the effort we are putting in off the pitch is definitely showing when we are on it.
“I think Cheltenham will be a great test for us and I was more than pleased to draw
them. Every game is another chance to prove ourselves and I'm confident we will do just that.
I know we will walk off that pitch having done all we can, we work for each other and I feel that
sets us apart from a lot of teams.”
Full back Ruby Lowe was a part of last season’s Cup run and has set her sights on going
one better this time around. “It would absolutely amazing if we could!” she smiled. “I think
we’ve got a fab team but we’ve still got a couple of matches to win to get to the Second Round
Proper but fingers crossed!”
Ruby has switched to play in a new position this season but is taking this in her stride.
“It’s actually really great,” she said, “I played right back at university so it was handy that is
wasn’t a total change! It’s a complete swap of what you’re thinking about on the pitch but I still
like to attack where I can.
“I think it will be a great match. We were doing really well in our league before COVID
and could have challenged for promotion. We have been working really hard on our fitness so
I think it will be a great battle and hopefully a great game.”
