Chelsea will go into the last match of the season knowing that a victory
will mean they have retained their title, following a 2-0 win against
Arsenal on Sunday.
Guro Reiten gave Chelsea the lead midway through the first half,
and Magdalena Eriksson added the second just before half time to clinch
a result which ends the Gunners’ last remaining hopes of winning the
league and put Chelsea on the brink of another success.
Manchester Utd are the only team still in with a chance of
overhauling Chelsea and are guaranteed a top two finish for the first time after they defeated
Manchester City 2-1. A superb second minute strike from Hayley Ladd put United ahead
and after Filippa Angeldahl equalised midway through the second half, Lucia Garcia scored
an injury time winner to confirm that United will play Champions League football next
season, whilst the Cityzens’ own hopes took a huge blow.
Aston Villa and Liverpool meanwhile battled out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Kirsty
Hanson gave Villa an early lead but Reds hit back through Katie Stengel and Natasha Dowie,
before Rachel Daly levelled matters on the stroke of half time. Stengel put Liverpool back in
front with her second goal, before Hanson completed her own double to earn Villa a share
of the spoils.
Reading FC Women are left in a worrying position with one match left to play after
going down 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur, who achieved safety for themselves. Beth
England netted two of the goals for Spurs, taking her tally to 12 for the season, and she was
joined on the scoresheet by Celin Bizet Ildhusoy
and Kit Graham before Justine Vanhaevermaet Tottenham Hotspur 4 (England 29,62, Ildhusoy 41,
