City stun Reading with late winner
Last season’s beaten Continental Tyres Cup finalists Bristol City started this season’s group
matches with a 1-0 win away to Reading FC Women thanks to a late winner from Abi Harrison.
The other Group D match saw Crystal Palace triumph on penalties against Lewes following a 1-1
draw, Molly Sharpe and Ini Umotong scoring respectively, ironically both from the penalty spot.
Liverpool also won against higher division opponents, beating Aston Villa on spot kicks
after Leanne Kiernan earned them a 1-1 draw, Shania Hayles having put Villa ahead. Sunderland
meanwhile won against Sheffield Utd on penalties after finishing 1-1, goals from Keira Ramshaw
and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk.
Caroline Weir, Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp, Jess Park and Ellen White all scored to give
Manchester City a 5-1 victory over Everton, whose consolation came from Grace Clinton. They
head Group B whilst Manchester Utd won the other game on penalties against Durham
Women. Ivana Fuso and Ella Toone scored for United in the 2-2 draw, Dee Bradley and Beth
Hepple replying.
In Group C, Coventry Utd are the early leaders after Charlie Estcourt, Katie Wilkinson and
Olivia Fergusson all scored in their 3-0 win over Watford, whilst Tottenham Hotspur were
narrow 1-0 victors against Charlton Athletic, thanks to a second half goal from Jiali Tang.
Things were tight in Group E, Megan Connolly scoring the only goal as Brighton & Hove
Albion won 1-0 at Birmingham City and a Lucy Parker strike saw West Ham Utd beat a
determined London City Lionesses side 1-0.
UEFA Women’s Champions League
It was a much better night for the FA WSL teams in the UEFA
Women’s Champions League as both recorded important
victories in their group matches.
Chelsea were first in action on Wednesday night with a
trip to Juventus, and a well taken goal from Erin Cuthbert put
them ahead on the half hour. Juve hit back six minutes later
through a volley from Barbara Bonansea. For the second game
running, Pernille Harder came up with a crucial goal for Chelsea,
this time it was the winner midway through the second half.
VfL Wolfsburg currently sit in top spot in Group A after they won 5-0 against Servette
FCCF, including two goals from Tabea Wassmuth.
Arsenal meanwhile bounced back from their opening day defeat to beat Hoffenheim 4-0
and put themselves in a stronger position in Group C. Kim Little gave them the led from
the penalty spot and Tobin Heath made it GROUP A P W D
