SGS and Olveston agree partnership
Olveston United Football club takes great pleasure in formally announcing its new partnership
with SGS College and their Academy of Sport.
The partnership will see the club’s Women’s team renamed to “SGS Olveston United
Women” and be based at the SGS College WISE Stoke Gifford Stadium as part of a new link to
enhance female playing opportunities in the region.
With first class facilities that have been used in the past by Championship football team
Bristol City and former Women’s Super League representatives Bristol City Women’s Football
Club, those involved with the team can be assured of benefiting from everything needed to
prosper in the South West Regional League.
Olveston United Chairman Stuart Evans said: "We are extremely delighted to be linking
with SGS College.
“The College has a national reputation for the strength of both its Academic and Academy
provision and the partnership will offer SGS Olveston players the opportunity to train, compete
and study in an outstanding environment."
SGS College CEO Kevin Hamblin added: "We are very excited to be linking with the
Olveston United Football Club. Olveston will provide a significant opportunity for aspiring young
women with aspirations to play in the professional game to experience adult competition in one
of the strongest amateur clubs in the area and players will feed into the Bristol City WFC pathway
over time."
Olveston United have just completed their second season in senior women’s football after
having been formed in the summer of 2020. Their first season ended with them lifting the
Division Two title in the Gloucestershire County Women’s League on the last day of the season as
well as promotion to Division One, where they have finished in third place. They also formed a
new reserve team last summer and they are competing in Division Three.
Pompey retain the Cup
Portsmouth retained the Hampshire Women's Senior Cup at the Silverlake Stadium, Eastleigh,
but not without a few scares in their 3-0 win against AFC Bournemouth. The victory was also
Portsmouth's 13th Hampshire Women's Senior Cup triumph, a record which is unlikely to be
broken.
Bournemouth looked to have taken the lead very early in the game when Becki Bath hit the
Pompey crossbar after a long upfield run, her shot gaining a deflection on the way which
wrong-footed 'keeper Hannah Haughton and a few minutes later Lucy Cooper went close but just
wide of the post.
Pompey, however withstood the pressure and Emma Jones won the ball from a clearance
and sent Shannon Albuery away. She managed to lay on a chance for Tamsin De Bunsen and
rather luckily her shot squirmed out of 'keeper Sam Chrippes' hands and rolled over the line in
the 15th minute.
The goal gave Pompey the boost they needed and Albuery came close to adding to the score
but was thwarted by Chrippes' save. The second goal nearly came when Emma Jones ran from
deep in defence and hit a shot from just outside the box which just curved away. Bournemouth
suffered a set-back in the 25th minute when Jade Bradley left the field injured to be replaced by
Elle Elkins.
Pompey were well on top during the second half but Bournemouth defended well with
Chrippes making some good saves. Emma Jones hooked a shot over the bar when well placed, but
Crippes dealt well with that. She, however, was beaten by a shot from Cherelle Khassal, but the
shot hit the side netting.
It was as late as the 74th minute before Pompey looked like winning the cup. Albuery split
the defence and Emma Jones slammed home an unstoppable shot.
Two late substitutes combined well to seal the victory in the 85 minute when Ava
Rowbotham interchanged with Danielle Lane before setting up Rosie McDonnell to finish the job
from a tight angle.
