Ashton & Backwell UFC 2 v Camberley Town FC 1
FA Vase 2 Qualifying Round 24-9-22
nd
The next hurdle to overcome, on sunny afternoon and an excellent pitch, en route to
Wembley FA Vase glory was presented by Camberley Town from the Combined Counties
League. And they did not have a smooth trip to the Lancer Scott, traffic problems on the
way causing a delayed start for this Second Qualifying Round match.
Perhaps that unsettled them, the visitors were merely workmanlike in their approach and
the Stags were certainly more inventive and played at a higher pace. It is perhaps telling
that when Botti scored the opener on 53 minutes, his and Coady’s persistence in front
of goal being rewarded, it was the visitor’s first shot on target. They had not been
without chances, early on Coady robbed Newman and his driving move drew a corner,
a half hour in and Benton supplied Coady, only to shoot wide, then Botti was denied by
a saving boot from Bishop. In contrast Cummings was lively from the off, one cross was
met by Charlie Saunders whose shot beat Cawdon, only for the upright to intervene, and
a superbly flighted Cummings ball beat the defence, but Banks hesitated and Cawdon
took his chance to gather, while Newman ran from deep and forced a save from him too,
and White was dangerous from any dead ball situation. Yet despite this endeavour eight
minutes from the restart Stags were behind.
But this was only temporary, Newman worked hard on the right to keep possession,
passed back to Hardidge on the edge of the box and his spectacular, curling shot into
the left hand corner made it 1-1. After this the game became much more frenetic,
genuine cup tie, with chances at both ends, yet a series of substitutions changed the
game to Stags advantage. Plant came on and almost immediately skilfully fed the ball
through to Banks who, hard and low, made no mistake this time. 2-1. Then Solari,
persistent down the left had a few chances and charges to test the Town defence, while
a White free-kick beat all except Cawdon. Indeed the only cause for concern a Lee
header from a corner was gathered by Coombes, who had his usual solid game in goal.
So a 2-1 win and passage to the First Round proper; perhaps the lesson from today is
to improve delivery in that final quarter, chances into goals, to further the advance on
Wembley.
