Today’s Game
Firstly, Cribbs FC would like to extend a very warm welcome to the visiting players, team
management, supporters and officials of Roman Glass St George as they make the short
journey down the Causeway, together with the match officials. We hope that you enjoy
your visit to the Lawns.
Match Reports
Last week saw the final league game of a highly successful first Hellenic season which sees
us attain a minimum position of fifth pending other results, we currently sit third.
Congratulations once again to Luffers, his management team and the lads on achieving our
highest ever Step 5 placing.
Saturday’s match against Brimscombe and Thrupp was another match ruined by the windy
weather conditions making decent passing football difficult.
The match was settled by a second half goal from Steve Murray following good build up play
featuring Nick Jones and Jake Hodgson.
The Hellenic League Bluefin Challenge Cup tie in midweek proved a more eventful affair as
we travelled to local rivals Chipping Sodbury on a crisp Tuesday evening.
Luffman opted for a more direct style of play on a difficult surface created by the recent lack
of rainfall.
The early stages of the match were even with Cribbs growing into the match and asserting
themselves with an early goal from Jake Hodgson. A Josh Bennett corner was nodded down
to skipper Jake Hodgson to stroke home from 12 yards past the defender’s despairing dive.
The match was largely ended as a spectacle when the Sodbury centre back left his keeper
in an awkward position. The keeper was coming out of his box to clear the ball, but the
defender had other ideas and headed it at him, causing the keeper to react by handling
outside his box. An unfortunate red card for sure, but the correct decision.
Cribbs extended their lead to three goals to nil before half-time with a probable own goal
and a penalty from Ross McErlain after a controversial handball decision. His first penalty
was saved, but the referee ordered a retake for either encroachment or the keeper stepping
off his line too early.
The second half saw Luffman make use of his substitutes and only one further goal was
added as Matt Spiller slotted home after a fine pass from Charlie Dashfield.
This Afternoon’s Opponents
We have obviously played to league matches against Roman Glass this season and honours
are even, so this is the decider! We won 3-1 at home early in the season and in the return
on a Friday night under floodlights some poor defending saw us lose 2-1.
Like ourselves the Glass are in excellent form recently and are on an eight-game unbeaten
run.
Clearly, we expect yet another tough match.
As always, get behind the boys!!! UTC
