MATCH REPORT
TUFFLEY ROVERS 3-2 BURNHAM
HELLENIC LEAGUE, PREMIER DIVISION
Ryan Dobbins’ 78 minute goal proved decisive, as Tuffley Rovers secured a tenth place
th
finish in the Uhlsport Hellenic League, Premier Division, with one game remaining, as
they defeated relegation threatened Burnham 3-2 at Glevum Park.
Dobbins started, following his excellent performance and goal after
coming on as a substitute in the Supplementary Cup quarter-final against
Thame United on Thursday evening, in an otherwise unchanged line-up.
After the excellent win against the league champions in their previous
game, there might have been concerns at the risk of complacency going
into a game against one of the division’s strugglers, but those fears were
at least partially allayed, when they took a lead almost immediately.
Tristan Haswell produced an excellent cross into the Burnham area which Pat Kinsella,
the visiting keeper, misjudged and when he failed to claim the ball, Walker was
presented with an opportunity to hammer the ball home from 6 yards, after just two
minutes.
Rovers looked dominant in the early stages and might have added to the scoreline, but
Burnham started to work their way back into the game and Rovers’ keeper, Dave Evans,
had to be alert, as he quickly advanced
from his goal to block Josh Jackman’s
effort. Two minutes later, Burnham went
close again, as Jesse Wilson headed nar-
rowly wide from 10 yards.
The game then went back into Burnham
territory and Rovers were given a golden
opportunity to reclaim the lead. Dan Wilson
looked to block Jake Burns pass and it
appeared to strike his hand, with referee
Sean Rudd immediately pointing to the spot. Warren Mann, who has scored from the
spot seven times this season, stepped up, but his shot, low to Kinsella’s right was greeted
by an excellent one-handed stop, as the Burnham keeper kept his side in the game
It proved to be only a temporary respite and Rovers did extend their lead on 36 minutes,
with Player/Manager the scorer.
