They are currently unbeaten and have five games in hand on the leaders who have just two to
play. Ellie Twigg and an own goal helped Wakefield AFC Res to a 2-1 win over Kiveton
Park, Eve Bennet with a goal on her debut for the visitors.
The only other League game played was in Division Two where leaders Handsworth
Development won 3-0 at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Emily Clayton, Elise Halyard
and Holly Jenkins with the goals in a victory which moved Handsworth three points clear, but
having played twice more than the pair of teams immediately below them.
All the other action came in the Shield where all the round of 16 ties were decided ahead
of this Sunday’s quarter finals. AFC Norton Woodseats were the highest scorers with Lois
O’Toole (2), Poppy Webb (2), Alex Meakin, Roxanne Reid and Katie Todd on the mark in a 7-1
victory over Sheffield City whose consolation came from Samantha Burwood. Division
Three leaders advanced at home to Division One outfit as Staveley Miners Welfare ran out
4-1 winners over Socrates. Staveley, with a 100% league record, are arguably too strong for
their division, while Socrates moved up in the summer. Carly Rowlands bagged a hat-trick to
take her on to 42 for the season and the half century is very much within her grasp. Sammy
Stokes was Staveley’s other scorer, while Amber Wilson was on target for Socrates. The other
Division One team in the last 16 also bowed out, Victoria Egege and Sophie Eyre were the
Sheffield Utd Community Development scorers in their 2-0 win at Rotherham Utd
Whitehill. Last season’s Shield runners-up Charnock Ridgeway were 3-0 winners over
Eckington Belles thanks to goals from Aaliyah Boreland, Kerry Clifford and Georgia Skitt.
Hannah Barden and Stacey Leigh netted for Kiveton Park Res who lost 5-2 at Penistone
Church. Goals from Brooke Chappell, Charlotte Marshall and Ellen Smith saw
Swallownest advance via a 3-1 win at Wickersley Youth, Ellen Key the home scorer.
Danielle Burrows gave Dearne & District the lead away to Mosborough who levelled
through Sadie Smith before the interval, while Shannon Marriott netted in the second half to
see the hosts progress. Yasmin Bird, Lydia Rae and Amelia Symons were the Mexborough
Athletic scorers in their 3-2 win at Mind Over Matter, Chloe Flude and Elizabeth Smith
with the home goals.
Somerset League
