Match Report
MILLBROOK AFC 1
ASHTON & BACKWELL UTD 4
It was our 4 trip down the M5 in 4 weeks but the first challenge wasn’t “should
th
it be 3-5-2 or 4-3-3” but would the coach fit through the narrow streets of
Millbrook! We already had someone get off to be travel sick. The driver made it
just!
Well, the Stags played just as well as the driver, dominating the game from start
to finish, for our biggest win and most complete performance of the season
against a side who had, from October to January, gone 11 games unbeaten to find
mid-table safety. The hosts threatened our goal once in the opening half but
Shepherd cleared the crossbar. Whereas the Millbrook keeper made 2, vital saves
from Miles Hardidge, who also saw his volley just shave the woodwork. Conner
Hartley, alongside Miles, was a constant thorn in the Millbrook side, had a
legitimate penalty appeal denied but was rewarded just before the break when
his 20 yard shot took a deflection to loop over the keepers head. Ashton &
Backwell took a deserved lead.
Meet the Player
With the visitors controlling midfield, we doubled our lead after 53 minutes. From
a corner Hartley forced a good save, the rebound fell to Charlie Saunders, his
effort hit the post but 17 year old Henry Sady followed up to find the right hand
corner of the net. Both Henry and Reece Hedges went close to scoring but
Backwell added a 3 on 70 minutes. Henry’s 50 yard ball from left wing to right
rd
found Zac Ford, his 1 time cross found Charlie unmarked to slot home from 8
st
yards. 10 minutes later the very impressive Jamie White repeated Henry’s 50 yard
ball, Zac produced another great cross which Conor Hartley converted at the far
post.
To Millbrook’s credit, despite being thoroughly out-played their perseverance was
rewarded as Toulson scored a consolation goal from close range. Equally Backwell
could have added to their tally as joe Bishop, now up front, forced a good save
then twice Conor broke away but both attempts drifted agonisingly wide with the
keeper beaten.
The whole team played so well, including the subs., as a team that there wasn’t
an individual M.O.M
