Match Report

BRISLINGTON 4 Vs ASHTON & BACKWELL UTD 0

On a very wet and muddy pitch that by the end resembled a ploughed field
a game of football tried to happen. The cynical amongst us might have
thought the only reason the game went ahead after a 11am pitch inspection
was because of the prospect of a bumper holiday crowd to boost the home
side’s bar takings, for which they were rewarded with a crowd of 226. Those
of us who had gone to watch football were less well treated.
We went into the game with Coomber, Char Saunders, George Brimson
suspended, Tomo still injured and Pressy with covid but frankly were not
good enough. The game itself will no doubt be remembered for X Ashton &
Backwell players showing NO seasonal goodwill at all!! Jordan Scadding’s
hat-trick, two goals coming in the first half, one a result of a poor clearance
with another ex-Stag George Jones, who had earlier hit the cross bar,
supplying the pass for the Scadding opener, a second from a Hemming’s
cross. His third came in added time when a mistake in the mire by an
otherwise excellent Man of the Match Reece Hedges put him through one
on one with Manning, who this time was beaten. Prior to that the Stags
keeper had made two good saves from Hemmings, tipping goalbound shots

over the bar both times. The third Bris goal was from a melee in the box,
Lewis getting the final touch ten minutes after the restart.
Stags did make chances, Skidmore from a free kick beating the wall, but not
quite on target, Saunders making Dorrington dive at his feet to stop a solo
run, a Cummings header just wide, Hedges beating the defence but both
headers wide from set pieces and Skidmore again solo in from the right yet
unable to get the angle past the home keeper. However all too often moves
broke down, some due to the poor quality of the pitch with players
frequently losing their footing, but too frequently by ill-judged passes. And
the much-changed line up due to holidays, suspensions and Covid would not
have helped either. On the positive side former Bristol Rovers and Bath City
Lewis Hogg looked assured in midfield on debut and young Henry Sady
        likewise in attack.
