In the only match to go ahead in the FA Women's Championship over
the weekend, Charlton Athletic picked up an important point from a
1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers.
The Addicks took the lead in the fourteenth minute when
Elisha Sulola was brought down in the area by Ria Montgomery and Rachel Newborough
scored from the resulting penalty. Blackburn fought back after the break and earned
themselves a share of the spoils, also from the penalty spot, Elise Hughes finding the
corner of the net after Charlotte Newsham had been fouled by Eartha Cumings.
The result was not quite enough to lift Charlton off the bottom of the table,
leaving them a point adrift but with a game in hand, whilst Blackburn remain in sixth
place.
Seven days earlier, with leaders Leicester City not in action, Durham Women
took the opportunity to move level on points with them at the top of the table by beating
London Bees 1-0.
Bridget Galloway scored the only goal of the game, seven minutes into the
second half, to extend the Wildcats' unbeaten run to fourteen matches whilst the Bees
remain just above the bottom two.
Sheffield Utd are seven points off the pace after making it two wins in a row
with a 2-0 success away to Lewes. Katie Wilkinson opened the scoring for the Blades on
27 minutes when she headed in a cross by Rebecca Rayner and the in-form striker netted
her second after the break, curling home a free kick from the edge of the area.
London City Lionesses lifted themselves up into fifth place, their highest
position of the season to date, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers. The
Lionesses took the lead shortly before half time through Elizabeta Ejupi and Atlanta
Primus added a second just ahead of the break. Ejupi rounded off the scoring with her
second goal, ten minutes into the second half.
On Thursday night, London City
Lionesses completed a good week for Charlton Athletic 1 (Newborough pen 14)
themselves by winning 1-0 away to Charlton Blackburn Rovers 1 (Hughes pen 68)
