The Barclays FA WSL
The quarter finals of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup meant that there
were no matches played in the Barclays FA WSL on Sunday, but there
were two matches scheduled to be played in midweek.
However this was also to be affected by outside matters. Chelsea
were set to play host to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening,
with top spot on offer for Emma Hayes’ side if they were to win.
However, on the day of the game, a Covid outbreak within the
Tottenham squad sadly forced the match to be postponed and a new
date will have to be arranged for the fixture.
The other game went on as planned though with Manchester City taking on
Everton at the Academy Stadium. The two teams had met three days earlier in the FA
Cup, with City winning 4-0 on that occasion, and Gareth Taylor’s in-form team were quick
out of the blocks with Ellen White heading over from a corner. It was another corner which
led to City taking the lead in the 25th minute, Georgia Stanway’s kick being diverted into
her own net off the unfortunate Simone Magill.
Before Everton were able to recover, they found themselves two behind. Former
Toffees defender Lucy Bronze was the creator, her low ball across goal being slotted in by
White from close range.
Everton’s best moments were coming from Claire Emslie and her shot was saved by
Ellie Roebuck following a good run. However as the game entered the second half, the
home side looked likelier to increase their lead with both Stanway and Keira Walsh going
close.
As the game entered the latter stages though, the third goal came and it was from
another corner, this time a diving header across goal from Hemp was turned it by the
outstretched leg of Alex Greenwood to register a goal against her former club.
The scoring had not ended and City were to match the 4-0 scoreline from the FA Cup
tie barely a minute later as Khijara Shaw ran at the Everton defence before laying the ball
off for Laura Coombs to power home a shot for the fourth.
The result was not quite enough to take City into the top three but it moves them
level with Manchester Utd, who have a superior goal difference.
This weekend, with the top two tiers in
the men’s game on an international break, Chelsea P-P Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal, Manchester Utd and Leicester City will -
play their home WSL matches against Manchester City 4 (Magill og 25, White 32,
Greenwood 84, Coombs 85)
Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Chelsea at Everton 0
their men’s stadiums.
