management, supporters and officials of Bridport Football Club, together with the match
officials to this afternoon’s opening Toolstation League – Premier Division clash of the

Match Report
On Tuesday evening, the 1st team beat Newent Town 3-1 at home in the extra
preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup in an absorbing cup tie, to book their place in
the next round, at home to Southern League, Berkhamsted.
They had the perfect start after scoring immediately from the kick off with a long pass
from Ross McErlain being flicked on by Jake Hodgson, into the path of Danny Webb who
scored with aplomb from a difficult angle, with his first competitive goal for the club,
since signing in the summer.
The remainder of the half was a fairly even, competitive affair with Newent having a fair
share of the possession without creating many real clear-cut opportunities. Cribbs main
opportunities in the first period came from set pieces, which they will feel that they
should have done better with.
After a few adjustments at half time, the home team were much more on the front foot
in the second half and kept possession well with the impressive Hodgson and McKenna
prompting and probing. In the 75th minute one such through ball found Steve Murray,
who was then brought down in the penalty area by the Newent defender. Murray dusted
himself down and sent Goode in the away goal the wrong way to provide the two-goal
cushion.
Six minutes later, Cribbs added a third goal following a bit of pin ball in the 6-yard box
after a corner, which Ross McErlain headed home his first competitive goal for the club.
Newent pulled one back in the 85th minute with a thunderbolt strike from outside the
penalty area. The home team then went in search of further goals but found the
outstanding on the evening Good in goal in imperious form with saves from Aki,
Hodgson and a McErlain free kick.

Unfortunately, the gloss was completely taken off of a brilliant game of football when,
post-match it came to light that valuable items had been taken from the away team’s
locked changing room and subsequently, one of the players cars being taken back at
Newent Town FC. The incident is subject to a continuing police investigation. Our
sympathy goes out to all of the Newent players who suffered lost valuables. It is
mortifying that in 2020, there are such mindless idiots in our society, and it is just a
reminder to us all that we have to always be extra vigilant! ☹
