FALMOUTH TOWN 2 ASHTON & BACKWELL UTD 1
WOODWORK TWICE SAVES THE F TROOP
Faced with an 8 hour round coach trip, 7 players missing, just a 13 man squad, it wasn’t
Non-League Paper
looking good. The team produced probably their best 90 minute performance of the
season and despite plenty of plaudits from the 380 home crowd, it wasn’t quite enough
to get anything from the game. The hosts put us under pressue from the off but the Stags
broke quickly from a corner, and Jack Fillingham was unlucky to see his shot deflected
just over. This quickly followed by the impressive Zak Ford, cross/shot beating everyone
across the face of the home goal.
On the half hour, Falmouth took the lead against the run of play with a “route 1” gaol that
should have been defended better, but Gedney did finish it well. Their left back punts a
50 yard ball, their striker wins the header, we are caught square, Gedney chips Comber
who was well off his line.1-0. We responded well, with 3 attempts on goal blocked or save
then Charlie Saunders shot wide. On the stroke of half time a killer punch, an A & B
clearance rebounds off a home player, our defence is caught flat, Gedney breaks free and
squares the ball to the unmarked Bray –Evans to tap in. h/t 2-0
The Stags hit back immediately after the break, a well flighted corner from James White,
caused havoc in the home defence, Shea Mannings was on hand to poke home from 2
yards. 2-1. Shea then saw his 20 yard shot curl just wide and Joe Banks headed straight
at the keeper. On 15 minutes Falmouth had their best chance to secure the game but the
Meet the Player
Striker headed over from 2 yards.
The last 20 minutes saw the home defence sit deeper and deeper as A & B pressed for
an equaliser. Shea went close again, Harry walker put in a great cross but Jack’s header
didn’t beat the keeper when well placed. Jack then hit the woodwork twice, a great shot
from 22 yards and another from close range. It wasn’t just quite enough, 3 points to the
F trrop.
The home fans were quick to remind me that they deserved something at the Lancer
Scott in august, we won
1-0 but they admitted we
deserved to win today. Its
not often that all the club
house gives you a round
of applause when you
leave.
