Match Report
Saturday’s seasonal FA Vase debut saw a great game for the neutral and shredded
nerves for the supporters of both sides. The 1st XI advanced to the Second Round
after coming from behind twice to win through by a 4-3 scoreline against Newport
(IOW) FC. Cribbs started brightly and immediately won a freekick. This was delivered
into the box by Lewis Waldy and headed over by the prolific goal scoring centre back,
Ross McErlain. Newport grew more into the game after the initial forays, but this did
not stop Cribbs taking an early lead through Josh Bennett. Aki picked up the ball on
the left touchline and skillfully worked his way to the box to deliver a low cross. The
cross was blocked, fell to Josh Bennett and he fired home a low shot from 10 yards.
The game continued to flow from end to end with both sides looking dangerous and
chances never seemed far away. The second good chance fell to Cribbs in form
striker, Steve Murray who shot over from eight yards. Newport punished Cribbs for
this miss with a goal before half time after an incisive break. They attacked through
the middle of the park, played a pass in behind and a low cross to the far post was
converted Connor Kelly. One all at half time and all to play for in the second half, a
tough ask for Cribbs as they now had to play into the ferocious wind that they had
not capitalised upon. Newport started the better side in the second half without
creating clear chances. Again, they were at their most dangerous when catching
Cribbs on the break and this led to the second in similar fashion to the first. Newport
drove through the middle, but this time moved the ball to their right. Jordan Browne
ran across to the near post and met the low cross at pace to shoot past Valero.
Although on the back foot, Cribbs were thrown a lifeline after more good work down
the right by Aki. His ball into the box found Murray and he was able to beat the
keeper with a shot from an acute angle. Newport continued to come forward and
regained the lead from a corner. Valero's punch did not clear the box and was driven
back into the far post. The defence hadn't had a chance to move out and the
Newport forward was able to convert easily. Rich Luffman had started to shuffle his
pack and it was one of his substitutes who drew Cribbs level for a second time.
Murray plucked the ball out of the sky, worked some space and shot at goal. Like all
good strikers, Dan Webb was following up and tucked home the rebound from the
keeper's save for 3-3. The third goal gave our lads renewed confidence and they had
couple of chances to make it 4-3, before Murray snatched the winner. The second
substitute, Matt Spiller won the ball in the middle of the park, knocked it to George
Kellow and he slipped Murray in behind the defence to score his second goal. Great
game and a credit to both sides. Six straight wins for Cribbs
