Match Report
ASHTON & BACKWELL Utd. 1 FALMOUTH TOWN 0
United up to 5 in the table
th
Perhaps it was the 2 game in 48 hours or their 10 game in 31 days but it was
nd
th
the home side who, in the 1 45 minutes, looked like they had been on a coach
st
for 3 ½ hours on a bank holiday Monday travelling up the M5. It took Backwell
43 minutes to muster a significant effort near the visitor’s goal, joe Cattermole’s
25 yard effort still didn’t trouble Coxhead the Falmouth keeper.
The reason Ashton & Backwell were still in the game was the work ethic of the
whole team and an outstanding defensive effort from Bishop, Walker, Anthony
and Pierce. Falmouth had 8 attempts on goal but very few on target, Lewis
Coombes didn’t have a significant save to make. It was a young, pacey Town
side that had all the possession, cheered on by 50-60 travelling supporters led
by “Superman” on the drum, Nixon, Barner and Hutchinson in particular caught
the eye. H/T 0-0
Whatever was said in the home dressing room during the break, it worked. A
& B were now competing, 1 st to the loose balls, retaining the ball better and
playing with pace. Skipper Connor Saunders tested the keeper with a low drive.
Manager Tony Beecham introduced 2 wide men after 65 minutes, bringing
Dean Preddie and local lad, Wil Solari.
Their impact in the 68 minute led to the only goal of the game. Recent signing
th
Joe Bank’s delightful 1 touch split open the visitor’s defence, Solari’s 1 time
st
st
left foot cross jus evaded the out-stretched foot of Banks but Preddie was
unmarked at the far post to tap in from 3 yards. From the re-start, Backwell
regained possession, Preddie broke at pace down the right flank, his well struck
shot hit the outside of the post. In the last moments of injury time Cattermole’s
fierce shot from 20 yards beat the keeper but thundered against the post.
Falmouth responded forcing Coombes into 2 very good saves from Nixon and
substitute Swan, to ensure the 3 points stayed with Ashton & Backwell, who
moved back into 5 place in the Toolstation Western league Premier Division.
