Match Reports
Only last week’s home game against Lydney to comment on this week!
This was another match played with the traditionally strong wind blowing up
from the Bristol Channel as always impacting the way each side goes about
their business.
Cribbs played the first half with the wind in their favour and took an early
lead as the visiting keeper struggled to deal with a Steve Murray cross which
he punched to George Kellow. Playing as a centre forward in this match,
Kellow snaffled up the chance and struck home from just outside the six-
yard box.
We did not have things our own way and despite playing into the breeze
Lydney fashioned shots and chances. The main chance fell to their number
nine after he bustled past our centre back Ross McErlain, it was only sharp
work from keeper Aaron Greatbanks rushing from his goal to block saving
us.
The attacking four of Kellow, Murray, Hodgson and Jones continued to probe
and link up throughout the half, creating chances that we did not take.
However, the vital second goal came from a Greatbanks clearance which the
Lydney defender flicked into the path of Kellow. A challenge on Kellow by
the keeper saw the ball fall to Nick Jones and he found Kellow twelve yards
out. No doubt what was going to happen next, George slotted home for his
second.
Watchers, including myself desired the cushion of a third goal, but it did not
come. However, our fears were unfounded as an excellent second half
defensive performance kept Lydney at arms-length with their efforts during
the half coming from distance without troubling Greatbanks.
In the end this was a comfortable home win, and we move onto today’s
match after another windy week…….
This Afternoon’s Opponents
We visited Calne at the end of October after a night of heavy rain and
impressive work by their ground staff saw the match played without any
problems.
It was an indifferent performance where we did not take our chances on a
heavy pitch and returned with a point after a scrambled effort from Jake
Hodgson. The Calne equaliser came soon after debutant Niza had hit the bar
with a marvellous curled effort and was fortuitous as a mis-hit shot fell to
the scorer, making us pay for our profligacy in front of goal.
Calne’s recent form has not been good, losing seven of their last eight
games. However, last week saw a draw with promotion contenders
Longlevens and we know full well that we should take no team lightly in this
competitive league.
As always, get behind the boys!!! UTC
