CHILDREN WITH CANCER UK

This afternoon there will be a Bucket Collection,
and a Raffle in aid of Children with Cancer UK
Charity. We trust you will all support this appeal
and give as generously as possible.
We are delighted to be able to assist this Charity,
and thanks to Nick Peare who suggested this
initiative; Liam and Deirdre Nolan at the College
where Nick works, sadly lost their daughter to cancer aged 9, and they have prepared the
       following statement-

“Our little girl, Laoise (pronounced Leesha), was born in 2007 and, at 10 months old, was
diagnosed with infant leukaemia. She spent the next 8 months in hospital (4 of them in
isolation due to infections) having steroid treatment and chemotherapy. The next 2 years
were spent having maintenance chemo with short stays in hospital along the way. She was
given the all clear when she was 3 and then just a month later relapsed. She started a
gruelling course of chemotherapy, caught an infection and spent 3 weeks in an induced
coma in intensive care. When she woke up, she had lost her hair and become mute.
There followed 2 months of recovery, total body radiotherapy and a hastily arranged bone
marrow transplant with another 4 months of isolation. Two months later, she relapsed
again and we were told that there would be little else that could be done. She spent the
next 6 years in and out of hospital, having chemotherapy, then radiotherapy when her
leukaemia showed up as solid tumours, and finally took part in a trial using a new
immunotherapy which was unsuccessful. She died in June 2016, aged 9.
She spent a lot of time on treatment but also a lot of time on living her life to the full. She
was courageous and brave as well as kind, thoughtful and determined. She was passionate
about drawing, writing, her animals and her Daddy!”

Many thanks to JB, who is again compiling his popular quizzes this season.
