fortnight ago, and also allowed only two matches in our division to take place. Thanks to
tremendous efforts by our team of groundsmen, our pitch recovered sufficiently to allow
our game against Swindon Supermarine to take place three days later. These efforts were
rewarded when our players showed similar commitment to the cause when registering a
2-0 win against our promotion-chasing opponents. We took the lead midway through the
first half when a tremendous cross field pass from defence found Nick Peare wide on the
left, and his equally superb pass to Sam Bell was well controlled by the on-loan City
youngster, who slotted past Martin Horsell in the visitors goal. We held this advantage
until the break, and Supermarine then enjoyed their best spell in the period immediately
after half time. Adam Forster made some good saves, and ‘Marine also had a “goal”
correctly disallowed for handball after the referee had consulted his assistant. We then
increased our lead on the hour when a good passing movement opened up the visitors
defence and Bell’s pass allowed Aysa Corrick to net at the far post- thus becoming our
nineteenth goal scorer of the season. We maintained our 2-0 lead until the end to notch
a well-deserved and most important three points.
Last Saturday’s visit to Met Police also resulted in a 2-0 scoreline, but unfortunately this
time we were on the wrong end of it against our mid-table opponents. Police top scorer
Jack Mazzone gave them the lead after four minutes, and then he made the game safe
with another goal four minutes from the end. We seldom showed our best form in the
match, and our performance may have been affected by the horrendous traffic delays
encountered en-route.
The same afternoon, Dorchester entertained Weston S Mare, and on this occasion The
Seagulls overcame The Magpies after a very close encounter. Chris Knowles’ speculative
long- range strike opened the scoring for Weston after 15 minutes, but Dorchester
equalised three minutes later when Tom Bath scored with a blistering 30 yarder. Weston
regained the lead five minutes from half time when Mike Symons sent a low shot from an
acute angle into the net at the near post. Dorchester tried to hit back again, and Tiago Sa
unleashed a superb volley which was tipped over the bar, but in general Weston
comfortably contained Dorchester in the second half to defend their slender 2-1 victory.
The postponed match at Truro City has now been re-arranged for Tuesday 17 March
th
-what better place to spend St Patrick’s Night! This means that we now have three
successive away matches- at Farnborough, Weston and Truro, before our next home
game against Wimborne Town three weeks this afternoon.
We continue to be very grateful for the support given to our team, both at home and away
matches, so far this season. Performances and results recently suggest that we are well
capable of competing at the higher level, but also confirm that every point will need
battling for this season. We are obviously competing against a high standard of opposition
each week, having had a particularly difficult run of fixtures during January and February,
and your continued support, especially in adversity during games, is vital as we try to
establish ourselves and earn a second season in the Premier Division.
