League Review
Goals flowed in the Southern League on Saturday with no fewer than 40 scored in the nine
Premier Division South games played.
Leading the way was the game at the South West Interiors Stadium where hosts Yate Town
eventually came out on top by the odd goal in nine against Gosport Borough. The visitors
stared better and opened the scoring in the first minute through Dan Wooden. Kyle Tooze
levelled the scores for Yate after 14 minutes and within ten minutes both Ben McLean and
Zac Drew had given the Bluebells a 3-1 lead which they maintained until the stroke of half
time when Brett Williams pulled a goal back for the visitors. Williams added his second after
an hour to bring the scores level again, but Tooze immediately restored Yate’s advantage.
Drew extended that lead with twenty minutes remaining and the home team held on to win
despite Issiaga Kaba’s goal ten minutes from time which made the final score 5-4.
Weston super Mare took the top spot in the table with a win at Yate in midweek but came
unstuck at Beaconsfield Town on Saturday. Elliott Buchanan netted the only goal of the
game.
The Seagulls’ defeat gave Truro City the opportunity to retake the top spot, but they too
slipped up, beaten 3-1 at third-placed Chesham United for whom Jordan Edwards scored
twice and Tobias Braney the other, all before half time. Tyler Harvey scored a second half
consolation goal for Truro.
Poole Town had to fight back from two goals down to win 3-2 at home to Hanwell Town.
Mark Waters and Conrad Lucan gave the visitors a good start but Jamie Whisken redued the
arrears before the interval. The goal gave the hosts the momentum they required and Toby
Holmes scored twicein the closing 15 minutes to snatch all three points.
Fifth-placed Salisbury kept in touch with the leaders by winning 1-0 at Harrow Borough
thanks to Marvin Brooks.
Dorchester Town shared a 1-1 draw at Winchester City after taking the lead through
Charlie Gunson. Luke King levelled for the home team.
Another high-scoring game took place at Swindon Supermarine but this time the away
th
side came out on top in an eight-goal thriller. Harry Williaiams gave Swindon an 11 -minute
lead and all the action came after the break. Jerry Wiltshire equalized for Hayes & Yeading
United and Cole Brown put them ahead. Williams was next to score to bring the scores level
again. Reece Cole restored Hayes’s lead which Moses Emmanuel extended from the penalty
spot with eight minutes remaining. William Tunnicliff gave the home team hope, but the
result was sealed in the final minute when Cole nabbed his second goal.
Hendon took the lead after three minutes at home to Bracknell Town but surrendered
that lead just four minutes later when Mickell Platt netted. Platt put Bracknell ahead after 24
minutes with his second goal and Joe Grant made it 3-1 after the break. Guri Demura
brought Hendon back into the game, but Grant’s second goal was enough to clinch the
victory. There was time for Shaun Lucien to make the final score 4-3.
Late goals from Matthew Harris and Craig Norman earned Merthyr Town a 2-1 success at
th
Hartley Wintney who had led from the 34 minute through Paul Hopes.
