Non-League Paper
injury time winner
Ashton & Backwell took just 12 seconds to take the lead in this keenly contested Premier
division game. From the kick off skipper, Conor Saunders launched the ball forward, Shea
Bennington Manning headed into the path of debutant striker Jack Fillingham. By beating
a defender and rounding the keeper, his first touches for his new club provided an assist
to Joe Banks , who tapped in from 3 yards.
Sherborne responded immediately, Alex Murphy forcing Lewis Coombes into a good
reactive save from close range then Conor Saunders cleared Murphy’s rebound off the
line. Following a great 30 yard pass from James White, 20 minutes later Bennington-
Mannings had a great chance to double the lead, he rounded the keeper but his soft shot
was cleared off the line by Matty Brown. H/T 1-0

Sherborne took control and were rewarded with an equaliser, when Guppy’s left wing
cross found centre forward Murphy. His headed rattled the cross bar, the rebound fell
kindly back to the No.9, who bundled the ball in from close range. Bennington Mannings
was booked for a late tackle on keeper, Josh Attwood who required lengthy treatment.
On 75 minutes, Sherborne’s centre half, Matt Brown, was shown his 2 yellow and
nd
dismissed, the referee proceeded to book Conor Saunders and while still lecturing him,
the Hosts took a quick throw in, with Backwell thinking it was their free kick. Murphy
found himself completely free and scored his 2 goal from 10 yards out.

All Ashton & Backwell’s substitutions had made a positive impact and Miles Hardidge and
Will Solari didn’t let their manager down. With 5 minutes left plus a lot of injury time,
Hardidge’s great left wing cross found Solari in the 6 yard box , he made no mistake to
equalise, 2-2. Both sides went for the winner, but the visitors had grasped the initiative
and looked the likeliest as White’s fierce drive was well saved by Attwood. In the 10th
minute of injury time, White’s corner found substitute Joe Bishop, his header hit the cross
bar, bounced out to Hardidge who made no mistake from 5 yards to clinch victory. The 3
points moved the Stags up 6 places to 7 to head a group of 10 sides separated by just
th
4 points.
