                                BUCKFAST ABBEY

Like all good things holidays come to an end, and we went back to the cottage to prepare for the
journey home the next day. Maps were opened, and the laptop consulted, and a decision was

made that we would call in at Buckfast Abbey.

For the drive home the sun was shining and the Abbey looked really bright in the sun. I always
thought that Abbeys were old buildings. This one looked quite new and bright and clean.

The original Abbey which was built in 1018 was destroyed by King Henry 8th around the middle
of the 1500s. He didn’t like Catholics. That’s strange, the ones I know are really quite nice

                                people.

He sent them all away, knocked down their Churches and stole all their money - and burnt most
of their books and manuscripts. Of course he didn’t actually do it himself. He got nasty Mr Oliver
Cromwell to do it for him. The Monks have made a good job of building a new Abbey, so maybe

we will be going back one day. You can come with me in the car - that would be good.
Much better than a visit to smelly donkeys.
