How to honour a man who is already
a monument, in stone dust all his life?
What ledger to the man, a local legend,
could possibly do him jus ce?
He saw inside enough cathedrals -
marbled in them - to see him out
He knew his Cypridea from his Viviparus,
his castellated Grub from his floored Spangle
From Newfoundland to Grey Rock
he crossed the ocean like an albatross
He could tweet a bird from a bush,
ckle a grass snake from a warm spot
His love was swi and long las ng, hewn
from Cliff Stone, Marble, Inland Freestone
A fulmar - gliding on for ever and ever -
that’s how we can remember him
