EDITORIAL
Thanks to all who contributed to the recent Spring Edition of News and Views. In addition to its
simulating content, it was made even more interesting by the wide diversity of styles of writing
and photographs.
“History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view.
Henry Glassie, US historian (1941- )
There are many such quotations which imply that we cannot know objectively what happened in
the past, we can only reach our own conclusions from the interpretations of events made in
written, sound, photo or video reports. These interpretations are made from different points of
view.
Quotations from eminent commentators remind us that we can learn from History, (and from
some who say we don’t seem to), however, the following pages of this edition of News and Views
have valuable elements of personal and more broadly historical reflection in them. These can
enable members of the Quaker community to understand not only who we are and where we
have come from but also clues as to where we might be going. No community is unchanging, it is
essentially dynamic, responding not only to broader social change but also to new insights
gained. Central to Quaker life is the gaining of such new insights through Worship together.
What happened in the past may not be reported as an objective record, but it is the more
valuable when given thoughtful interpretation. Soon we will be appealing for contributions for the
Autumn/Winter edition. What event matters to you? How do you interpret them.
Send us a paragraph or two, or three; send us a poem; send us a photograph.
Share with our readers what you are thinking. The last date for submission to the Autumn/Winter
edition will be Saturday, 10th September ca.newsandviews@gmail.com
