The Great American Outdoors Act (GAO) passed the Senate and is now up for consideration in the House. Per the Public Lands Council this bill pro- vides $9.5 billion bailout to federal agencies for their maintenance backlog.
This bill also provides $900 million annually for the Land and Water Conser- vation Fund (LWCF). Congress approved the LWCF in 2019 but did not fund it at that time. This bill authorizes the funding ($900 million annually) which allows for 40 per cent to be spent on federal purposes and 40 per cent must go to states.
1. How would you address the $9.5 billion maintenance backlog?
2. Do you agree that $900 million annually should go to LWCF? If not, how would you direct these monies?
3. Does the federal government need more land when they have illustrated their inability to maintain what they already possess?
