The 36th annual "Race Across America" was held in June starting on June 17th. Commencing in Oceanside, California and nishing in An- napolis Maryland, this strenuous 3,144 miles of terrain is billed as "The toughest bike race in the world,” and according to Chris Hu man, par- ticipant and Braman’s own Director of Service, It is indeed non‐stop.
The course travels through California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Mary- land, and includes at least 170,000 feet of arduous climbing along the way. “I was on a four‐man team and one of the four of us was always on a bike,” recounts Hu man. “It was the equivalent of an over 3,000 mile relay as we each took turns on the bike, and in each 24 hour peri- od we each rode approximately 110 miles.”
Supported by a crew of 14 people and 4 vehicles, the Plantagenets, all Palm Beach county residents including Hu man and also Michael Falk, Chad Wilkinson, and Robert O’Sullivan, won their age group and nished rst in the 50‐59 category in the remarkable time of 7 days, 16 hours, and 7 minutes.
Riding day into night, the team encountered numerous challenges, including severe weather such as record heat in Arizona of 118 de- grees, and 35 degrees two days later climbing to the top of Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado, hail storms in Kansas, and torrential rain and ash ooding in Ohio and West Virginia.
Grueling as it might have been, Hu man and his teammates found it ultimately very rewarding in terms of personal and team accomplish- ment, as they raised over $400,000 for three local charities: The American Heart Association Teaching Gardens, The Palm Beach Police Foundation, and Opportunity Inc., a pre‐school in West Palm Beach for underprivileged children.
Braman Motorcars, among other local companies, proudly sponsored the team and will certainly do so again in years to come.
