the scenes for many years working with many familiar names. He produced Etta James’ ‘Let’s Roll’
record. He was Johnny Lang’s producer for the first two records, so he’s been around, but he’s
really great and so I come in with basically knowing what my songs sound like and how I want
them to sound and he was able to take that idea and just kind of run with it and just put the sugar
on the top and make it sound even better. Then I actually did come up with a couple of new songs in
the meantime while we were shut down because we went into the studio last January and we were
gonna have this record out in June. Well, of course, in March everything shut down and so the
record shut down as well. We were not able to get into the studio then again until I think July, end
of July maybe, so in the meantime, I wrote a couple more songs which I then gave to him to
produce. I said here you go; I’m going to let you produce these two and so that was fun to give a
little bit of creative control over to him because I trusted him, and I knew he would do a great job
with it. Yeah, it’s kind of a collection of songs. Different kinds of songs. Many different sounds.
They’re all different.
BiTS: Tell me something about the songs then.
JP: Well you’ve got everything from gospel to Latin to straight-up sounds like New Orleans, like
Second Line, Professor Longhair. It’s just like a wide range of styles, but the song writing is all very
me. I just got asked today how much of the songs are about me and how much are just made up in
the stories and I think there’s part of me of my life and my stories in every song, like a theme or
something like that, but they’re not all directly about my life, but there definitely is a vulnerability
in all the lyrics. There is something definitely relating to something about me in all of them. They’re
very vulnerable lyrics, but they’re also very empowering from a female perspective.
BiTS: The suggestion that you’ve got Second Line type music in it to me says there may be a horn
section. Do you use a horn section?
JP: Yeah, got horns in this one.
BiTS: Oh, wonderful. I just love horn sections. If ever I was to perform with a band, I’d have to
have a horn section.
JP: Yeah, hopefully, I’ll get to the point where I can start paying everybody cos I want one too
[laughing].
BiTS: [Laughing]. When does the album come out?
JP: It comes out February 12th.
BiTS: And available in all the usual outlets, I guess?
JP: Yeah, if you wanna buy direct from me, if you’re still into CDs, I’ve got physical product on my
website, but you can also get the digital right from my website as well at joyannparker.com, but yes
streaming as well, it will be available everywhere.
BiTS: Tell me what you see as the future, Joyann.
