BiTS and Pieces: Stuff and occasional nonsense
TAKE ANOTHER LISTEN
Playing through the ol' collection during this time of incarceration eventually brought
me to the cds. Where to start? I decided to just grab 'em randomly rather than go in
alphabetical order as I did with the vinyl.
I've just been listening to 'Memphis Jug Bands - Walk Right In', number 41 in the Blues
Collection Series which came out a few years back, each disc was accompanied by a
magazine.... Remember?
There are eighteen tracks on here, seven from Cannon's Jug Stompers and eleven from
the Memphis Jug Band. The dates of recording... 1927 to 1930, but here's the thing - not
one snap, crackle or pop on any of the selections. They're so clear, it's almost as if the
groups are playing in your front room!!! Seriously.
Where did they find such clean 78's? Maybe they had access to the original acetates?
This is 'keeper' if ever there was one.
I have the double album (vinyl) of Cannon's Jug Stompers on Herwin Records and
Matt Long
although sound quality is pretty good, it's not a match for the sound on this cd.
So, if you like jug band music and you can find this disc, buy it.
