respondent's preferred tool however it can be noted that since you want to reach all relevant stations
and shows then it would be prudent to learn which format each prefers. Artists - you want to make
it easy to receive and catalogue your music. Notice the percentage of respondents that prefer digital
submissions to arrive on their own online form. Change is constant within the music industry.
This is extremely important to know if you are submitting new releases to radio. As you can see
80% of the music directors and show hosts share that they report to at least one chart service. Hint:
Something that every artist should request on their one sheet is to be included on the station or
show's playlist distribution list. Then no matter which tracking service(s) they report to you will
know that your music was spun by that particular station/show.
In Closing: We all know that the industry continually changes. For example if I were to harbour a
misconception about the way things are done today based on what I learned years ago then the results
I share with my clients would be skewed accordingly. So to stay current I reach out to those in the
know. In this case it was the stations and shows. They were gracious enough to participate and that
allowed me to review a number of possible changes that I had picked up on at various get-togethers
and over the phone this past year. This consolidation of information, these survey results, go hand
in hand with analytics reports that I generate for my clients after each of their international press
releases, radio submissions, video submissions, or portfolio mailings. I generate these reports based
on the facts we gather from the actions we take internationally. The objective is to visually see
progress through numbers. Then to plan our next move(s) based on the inclusion of the latest results.
Everything we do including relationship-building is based on current information. For instance it's
common to have an artist say they want to make the Billboard
Shazam is a mobile/cell app that can identify music,
chart. However the vast majority of them do not know that movies, advertising, and television shows, based on a
spins are not the only qualifying information used to build short sample played and recorded using the microphone
on the device. It was created by London-based Shazam
their ranking. Some are just amazed when I tell them that Entertainment, and has been owned by Apple Inc. since
Shazams are important and then ask them if their presence 2018. Wikipedia
on Shazam is up to date. Look at Shazams this way - what
would be a good indicator to use to predict an upcoming hit? A good hit indicator would not only
reveal how many people listened to a particular song but also reveal how many times that same
person listened to it over a given period of time. That's useful information.
The over arching point is that just about everything in music and radio changes, evolves may be a
better word. Whatever was a known singular measurement tool in the past may not be the only
identifier being used today. Submission paths change, policies change, formats change, and more of
course. Thank you to everyone that responded - I sincerely appreciate your answers and comments.
