NORMAN DARWEN’S CHRISTMAS INTERVIEW(S)

For many, many years, BiTS has benefited from the sterling work and phenomenal
knowledge of Norman Darwen, a master reviewer with a wonderful ear. Norman’s
Christmas interviews have become something of a tradition and 2023 will not spoil that.
Here is Norman’s interview for this year.

Janice Harrington has been
living in Europe since 1980,
but she was born in Cleveland,
Ohio in 1942 and is well-

known and highly-respected in
Europe as a singer of blues, jazz,
and gospel. She has many

excellent and unfailingly
interesting and enjoyable CDs
available:

Do you recall hearing any Christmas
blues when you were a youngster?

My favourite was Charles Brown’s

‘Merry Christmas Baby’, my mother had
it in her record collection. I even met
him on the Stockholm Jazz and Blues

Festival.

What was he like?

He was down-to-earth and very friendly.

I only was on the same festival bill
as him, and we just said “hello”.
