Symmetry—Another Horizon—Wake The
                                                 Dead! Production

Symmetry are a folk blues duo from France and

“Another Horizon” is their second album release.

The album opens with the title track ‘Another

Horizon’ which has some gentle acoustic guitar
overlayed with some driving funk guitar. ‘Ol’ Boy

Blues’ is a gentle twelve bar with some slide
guitar. ‘When End Draws Near’ has a more Amer-
icana feel whilst ‘Lovely Flower Bud’ features an electric guitar solo over some

gentle acoustic guitar. ‘Black Eyes Blues’ starts off well with a bluesy riff but then
    seems to lack direction.

There is some more slide guitar on ‘The Wise And The Fools’ and ‘Winter Night-
mare’ has that bluesy dropped D tuning to it. ‘You’re Close To The End’ has a nice

lighter acoustic guitar vibe that has a hint of 1960’s west coast. ‘Faceless’ has an
almost trippy Beatles feel to it whilst ‘Free Spirit’ features a nice harmonica

break. ‘Simple Delight’ reminded me of 1960’s English prog-folk before the al-
bum closes with ‘Hide It Or Die’.

Phil Wake has a nice gentle voice and his French nuances are both pleasant and
soothing that work well with his acoustic guitar style of playing. Jean-Yves

Besnard plays lead guitar with additional vocals and harmonica. This duo’s folky
blues are very hard to pigeon hole; at times Chris Rea came to mind at other
times maybe Dr. Strangely Strange or the Incredible String Band.

Whilst Jean-Yves is undoubtedly a skilled guitarist I didn’t think that his electric

guitar solos and use of effects really works here. The solos seem to cut across the
gentleness of the songs and I found them somewhat distracting. I think the songs
would be better served by being solo acoustic or maybe swing towards having

bass and drums to give it that full band sound.

This is only my opinion so please give it a spin and see what you think.
