Countless stars throbbing with light.
Music - ‘Milky Way’ by Syd Barrett.
INT. SCHOOL. SCIENCE CLASS - DAY
Drawn on a Chalkboard is an Atom - Nucleus, Photon and
Electron.
SCIENCE TEACHER
The Atom. The basic building block
of all matter in the entire
Universe.
A SCIENCE TEACHER teaching a classroom of 11 year olds.
SCIENCE TEACHER (CONT'D)
They’re too small to be seen, even
through a microscope.
CLOSE ON WOLFGANG LANE: He’s around eleven; tousled brown
hair and deep dark eyes. He’s new to the school having only
just moved to the area and doesn’t know anyone. An only
child, fatherless and friendless.
His exercise book is filled with strange little drawings.
SCIENCE TEACHER (CONT'D) GORGEOUS
If you blew up an atom to the size
of a football stadium, the nucleus
would be about the size of a marble
and the electrons flying around the
edge of the stadium would be size
of a fly. In between there would be
nothing. Just empty space.
The SCIENCE TEACHER glances up at the clock.
SCIENCE TEACHER (CONT'D)
So, all that we see and touch in
this seemingly solid world is made
of atoms and an atom is 99.999%
space. Which means everything,
everywhere is made of - absolutely
nothing.
The School Bell RINGS, announcing the end of the week.
SCIENCE TEACHER (CONT'D)
Have a good weekend and remember -
no running in the corridor!
