Advantages of Reading
As an intellectual thing, a book is prototypically a composition of these great length that it requires
a substantial investment of time to compose and a still significant, though not so extensive,
investment of time to browse. In the restricted sense, a publication is a self-sufficient section or
part of a longer composition, a use that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long works had to be
written on several scrolls, and each scroll needed to be identified from the book it included.
Therefore, for example, each part of Aristotles Physics is referred to as a book. From the
unrestricted sense, a book is the compositional whole of which such segments, whether called
chapters or books or components, are parts.
The intellectual content in a physical book does not need to be a composition, nor be called a
book. Novels can consist just of drawings, engravings, or photographs, or such matters as
crossword puzzles or cut-out dolls. In a physical book, the pages can be left blank or may feature
an abstract group of outlines as support for ongoing entrances, e.g., an account book, an
appointment book, an autograph book, a laptop, a journal, or a sketchbook. Some bodily
publications are made out of pages thick and sturdy enough to encourage other physical items, like
a record or photograph album. Books could be distributed in electronic form as e-books along with
other formats.
Although in ordinary academic parlance that a monograph is understood to be a specialist
academic work, instead of a reference work on a single scholarly topic, in library and information
science monograph denotes more broadly every non-serial publication complete in one volume
(publication ) or a finite number of volumes (a novel like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost
Time), compared to serial publications like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. A passionate reader
or reader of novels is a bibliophile or colloquially,"bookworm". A shop where books are bought and
sold is a bookshop or bookstore. Novels can also be sold elsewhere. Books may also be borrowed
from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010, approximately 130,000,000 different titles
were released. In some wealthier nations, the sale of published books has diminished due to the
increased use of e-books.
In the 2000s, as a result of growth in availability of cheap handheld computing devices, the chance
to share texts through electronic means became an appealing alternative for media publishers. The
term e-book is a contraction of"electronic book"; it pertains to some book-length publication in
electronic form. An e-book is usually made available through the internet, but also on CD-ROM and
other forms. E-Books may be read either using a computing device with an LED screen such as a
conventional computer, a smartphone or a tablet computer; or by way of a portable e-ink display
device known as an e-book reader, like the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo eReader, or
even the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers attempt to mimic the experience of reading a print
publication by using this technology, because the displays onto e-book readers are not as
reflective.
