Gerrit, a businessman in the gas sta- tion industry and a citrus farmer in the Sundays River Valley has, among other, a Bonsmara stud on his farm near Paterson in the Eastern Cape. He became part of the Frontier Bonsmara Breeders’ Group this year, which is a great honour to him. The stud herd is kept under extensive conditions on natural veld. The field is mainly sweet grass. He leaves the manage- ment of the herd in the capable hands of Mr Tokwan Cakwebe, who is an excellent
stock farmer according to Gerrit. According to Mr Rabé Kok, the Bayer agent for the southern coastal regions of the Eastern Cape, he initially recom- mended to Gerrit to use Byboost Calf for his young animals to give them a necessary boost, after Gerrit bought the animals from
a different environment.
After a month, Gerrit was so impres-
sed with the real difference he saw in his animals, that he started to use Byboost Cattle for his adult animals as well. Despite the drought the last couple of years in

the Eastern Cape, which is a heartwater area. The animals are kept extensively in the Eastern Cape bushlands and spek- boom veld. He is part of the Karoo Boer Goat Breeders Group that delivers veld- adapted rams.
The animals are on the veld from the time of weaning and are only rounded off from three months before being sold.
ADAPTED ANIMALS
Because Gerrit and Erik’s animals are kept on the veld, adaptability is an im- portant trait. Gerrit’s breeding goal is medium-frame type, early-mature cattle with a genetic make-up that ensures low birth weight, good milk production and a good weaning weight.
His goal over the next four years is to breed animals that are phenotypically structurally correct, cull the unproductive female animals and breed the correct bulls to reach his breeding goals.
HOW TO USE IT
Rabé says the use of the Byboost products in livestock has some important benefits. Firstly, the product gives the animals’ immunity system a necessary boost, which means they are more resistant to diseases. Secondly, the products for younger animals also include nucleotides that, in conjunction with the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids, lead to a better
weaning weight.
Finally, the product also contains sele-
nium (Se), which contributes to better fertility in the animals.

in the drinking water, as well as over ani- mal feed.
Byboost Lamb and Kid is formulated for younger sheep and goats and Byboost Sheep and Goats for older animals.
For cattle there is Byboost Calf for the younger animals and Byboost Cattle for the older animals.
According to Rabé, calves are dosed at the age of four weeks and again at weaning time, according to the weaning weight.
The drought in the Eastern Cape is crea- ting huge problems for Erik as well, but he says thanks to the Byboost products, his animals still perform. The condition of the ewes decreases during the drought, affecting fertility, but the product gives the ewes the necessary boost to easily become pregnant under drought conditions.
Byboost can be given at critical times, like before mating season or at lambing and calving time when the energy needs of the ewes or cows are increasing. After that the product is given every three months.
The product can be used in extensive, as well as intensive conditions.
