Byboost contributes
to reproduction success

David started farming on a family farm
in 1977 with his father and later his bro- ther joined them. They started expanding from about 530ha of land to 3 020ha.
“Initially we only milked, but in the early 1980s we also started irrigating and plan- ted maize. We did all kinds of things just to try and be at the forefront of new and developing technology,” he says.
After his father and brother passed away, David however lost parts of the farm.
“I kept one part of the farm and used rental land to extend my farming opera- tions again, but I experienced problems
with artificial insemination (AI). The cal- ves are delivered to feedlots. During the last season the bull calves weighed 284kg on average and the heifers 250kg.
“We utilise natural pastures in the sum- mer. There are parts sweet thornveld with vaalbos that we keep for the winter. We also have lands where we plant oats and radishes between the maize. After the mai- ze has been harvested, the cows graze on it as part of our wintering system,” he says.
David mainly consults in the manage- ment of reproduction in herds for fellow farmers and specialises in AI, pregnancy monitoring, bull fertility tests and the transfer of embryos.

BYBOOST
David started using Byboost, a product of Bayer Animal Health, to better detect heat sensing in cows that must be insemina- ted. Byboost is a supplemental nutritional product that offers livestock the correct dose of electrolytes and essential minerals.
“We used a different product before and heat detection was much more difficult. Since using Byboost in the synchronisa- tion system, we have had great results.
“On the days when cows are supposed to go on heat, we have a heat rate of almost 100% and our heat rate and conception rates are excellent. We get fantastic results with Byboost. We give each cow an oral dose of 100ml and their responses to the product are outstanding.”
BAYER SERVICE
Dawid says in his farming operations he only uses people that are available.
“If an agent doesn’t advertise his pro- duct to me or render a service to me, I don’t buy the product. The reason for this is that I want to build a relationship with a company. If a company doesn’t have after-sales services, it creates problems. If I have a problem with my animals on the farm, I won’t have someone to turn to for advice. At the end of the day, this is the most important thing to me.”
For that reason, David is hugely pleased with Bayer’s service delivery.
“I buy products from a company with a strong technical background. If there is a problem with the product, they can help me solve it. In this respect, Bayer complies with all my needs.”
