Concept of prevention
Health promotion and disease prevention will have become increasingly
important in nursing care. The nursing profession as a care professional should
develop more knowledge and more communication skills with regard to
prevention, changing lifestyle, and promote the health of patients by supporting
self-management. The professional nursing should focus on people at a high risk
of health problems and influences the lifestyle and the behavior of people with
knowledge of epidemiology, prevention, health education, health determinants,
and social-cognitive determinants. The nursing professional should know the
principles of self-management and insight into the complexity of lifestyle and
behavior and knows ways of motivating patients to other, healthier behavior.
The nursing professional should be aware of the influence of culture on health
for early detection and risk assessment, and can perform interventions focused
on individual and collective prevention.
Prevention of disease is the measures which not only to prevent the
occurrence of disease, but also arrest its progress and reduce its consequences
once it is established.
Prevention is defined as the planning for and the measures taken to
forestall the onset of a disease or other health problem before the occurrence of
undesirable health events. There are three distinct levels of prevention:
primary, secondary, tertiary prevention.
