or BS 6658:1985. While I recommend wearing
protective gear, the choice ultimately lies with the
rider.
Comfort is a key factor in safety, as it allows greater
focus on the road. Thankfully, many high-quality
options provide both comfort and robust protection,
though they can be pricey.
The essential takeaway is that motorcycle riders
should have the ability to make informed choices. If a
rider opts for lightweight gear, they should understand
its protection levels. Conversely, those seeking
maximum safety should not be misled by marketing
claims; they need access to transparent test data.
Your Choices in Motorcycle Safety Clothing Are
Diminishing
Since EN 13595 was withdrawn on September 5,
2022, only EN 17092 levels A, AA, and AAA remain.
Alarmingly, garments certified to AAA may offer up to
89% less protection than those certified to EN 13595
Level 2.A straightforward solution would be to add
higher classifications (AAAA and AAAAA) to EN
17092, enabling riders to select the highest safety
levels. Alternatively, a national standards body like the
British Standards Institution could develop an
optional, higher standard for companies seeking to
demonstrate superior protection levels.
However, LHR Magazine has discovered that there’s
significant opposition to implementing higher
standards. Why might some brands resist offering
safer motorcycle gear?
• Market Competition:
• If EN 17092's AAA level becomes the highest
standard, it could equalize the performance of
various products, making it hard to distinguish
between them.
• Production Challenges:
• Creating high-performance motorcycle clothing
that’s also comfortable and affordable can be
complex. Some brands may prefer to compete
through marketing rather than superior safety
features.
• Market Dynamics: Higher safety standards could
attract more brands to the market, challenging
those currently dominating the high-performance
segment.
In summary, while progress has been made, there are
still significant challenges ahead in ensuring that
motorcyclists can choose the safest protective gear
available.
