THE LOTOS CLUB JULY 1, 2018 – JUNE 30, 2019 OUR 149th YEAR
As the Lotos Club approaches the one hundred ftieth anniversary of its founding, its members are more grateful than ever for the peaceful respite the Club provides. In a year characterized by political stalemates, natural disasters and discord around the globe, polls increasingly report that Americans are feeling “worn out” by the news.
The year began with a summit in Helsinki in July between President Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, an event that created an uproar when Trump seemed to accept Putin’s assertion that Russia had not interfered in the 2016 American elections. Controversy contin- ued following the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. After contentious hearings marked by charges of sexual impropri- ety, the president’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, was elevated to the bench, tipping the balance of the court in favor of a more conservative agenda. But happily, concerns about the health of Justice—and Lotos member—Ruth Bader Ginsburg proved to be unfounded.
