In September,  re gutted Brazil’s national muse- um destroying thousands of precious arti- facts. The world held its breath again in April as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris caught fire. Miraculously, the landmark still stands, and the French president Emmanuel Macron vowed it would be rebuilt within  ve years.
As scientists, pundits and politicians debate cli- mate change, communities worldwide experi- enced extreme weather, including devastating wild res in California and wide-spread  ooding in the Midwest. While New York City escaped the worst of the weather, a health emergency was declared after an outbreak of measles, a child- hood disease thought to have been eradicated.
New Yorkers  ocked to the City’s newest des- tination, Hudson Yards, sure to take a self- ie atop its centerpiece, “The Vessel,” Thomas Heatherwick’s sixteen-story structure of con- nected staircases. And just when we all needed some good news, the British royal family announced that American-born Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, had become the proud parents of baby Archie, seventh in line to the throne.
At the Lotos Club, members gathered for pro- grams that touched on many of these issues—or o ered escape from them. Here is an account of the year’s activities:
