Lotos’ 149th Year
The Art Committee (Rosette Arons and Leon J. Wender, co-chairs) put together a varied sched- ule of events for the 2018–2019 year covering all aspects of fine art. In the fall, the Committee honored Peter Halley at an evening where he received the Award of Distinction. An icon of the New York art world since his early days as a key participant of the 1980s East Village cul- tural scene, Halley is best known for his vibrant day-glo geometric paintings and installations, filled with unpredictable color combinations. The Committee hosted two evening lectures. The first was co-sponsored with the Science and Technology Committee and featured Amy Herman, a lawyer and art historian who uses works of art to systematically sharpen observa- tion, analysis and communication skills. In the spring, Sandra Bloodworth, director of MTA Arts and Design, and Ann Hamilton, artist, shared the process of realizing their recently completed subway commission for the World Trade Center/Cortlandt station, which re-opened in fall of 2018. Also in the spring, the Committee hosted a film screening of Lotos member Sundaram Tagore’s Louis Kahn’s Tiger City.
In March, Lotosians enjoyed the annual “What Members Collect” exhibition. This year, the theme was “Color” and the show was curated by Nancy Hall-Duncan and Isabel Pavão-Horvath.
Throughout the year, five tours were held: members visited the Blue School for a tour led
