W.D. & H.O. Wills was founded by Henry Overton Wills (1761- 1826) in 1786. Some time after he moved from Salisbury to Bristol going into partnership with Samuel Watkins who together opened their first shop in Castle Street.
Their product quality and reputation were consistent and the firm made steady progress selling tobacco products until around 1871 when they entered the cigarette market. Their original brand was Bristol, followed by Passing Clouds in 1874, Three Castles in 1878, and in 1888 launched one of the most famous cigarettes - Woodbines, priced at 5 for 1d. Noted for its strong unfiltered cigarettes, the brand was cheap and popular in the early 20th century with the working-class as well as army men
