603. ENGLISH 1753 DATED BELLARMINE TYPE ALE BOTTLE. 8.8ins tall. Most delightful ovoid
Bellarmine style, London made, hand thrown, stoneware form, possibly for ale or spirits. Overall variating salt glaze featuring an upper section, visibly darker, and a highly characterful drip down
the lower front. Thick/ chunky curved, cork closure, lip. Upper belly, hand inscribed, ‘J. S/ 1753.’ It
is uncertain if the initials were for a pub landlord
or maybe for a personally made piece? Minor
base flaw, most likely in manufacture, otherwise exceptional condition. A most significant and
important dated early English bottle, so rarely seen on the open market - an outstanding offering.
9.8/10.NR. £4,000-6,000+
