638. I CHRISTMAS 1726 DATED SEALED ENGLISH
ONION. Unrecorded in Burton. 6.8ins tall. Classic
English pancake style onion wine bottle in typical
black (dark green) glass. Base kick up, crude pontil,
tapering neck (attractive striations), with distinctive
pointy string rim (see close up - probable in use slight
damage). Large, well struck, low body seal, simply
READS: I/ Chriftmas/ 1726. John or James Christmas
(J was written as ‘I’) but is untraced. Christmas’s are
recorded in the West Country, Surrey, Wales and East
Anglia at this date and also in America. Apart from lip
damage & some general ageing/ wear, commensurate
with age, a very
fine example.

637. GS SEALED HANDLED ENGLISH ONION
WINE BOTTLE. 8.1ins tall. A very special offering
in the form of an English onion wine bottle form
carrying a large, extremely crisply struck, body
seal with the initials G S. Wonderful, super crud,
hand applied handle. Comes with an old hand
written envelope: This is the decanter out of which
the murderers of Archbishop Sharp received
refreshment from Grizel Stobie. 17th Century
belongs to Charles Browns Heirs. Lip section
missing plus body crack - whole seems perfectly
stable? Still a significant black glass form of
exceptional rarity, with strong Scottish connections.
