   65. LLANELLY TOOTH PASTE POT LID. 2.4ins square. Described in ‘Historical Guide
to Advertising Pot Lids’ by Houghton, Layden & Taylor (p627) this exact same pot lid is illustrated and described as bearing a “stunning set of teeth pictorial.”
There are a couple of underside base flakes which don’t spoil the display factor of this exceptional rarity. The rust, as it was dug, has been left on the lid - to clean or not to clean? An especially significant, once in a lifetime
opportunity, to acquire a very special UK pot lid ‘gem!’ (8/10) NR £1,200-1500+
NB: This was dug by Mike Bowen at the famous Aberystwyth tip
in 1999. He told BBR “we were living in Bicester at the time and a
collector friend got in touch saying he had permission to dig the site Saturday and Sunday afternoons. They were going to build a new school on a Football/ Rugby pitch known to be located on top of an old tip.
I travelled to Llanelli on 3 consecutive weekends staying at my
Mother’s before travelling a further 70 miles early to Aberystwyth. The first Sunday we had fine rain all day, there were bottles everywhere as the turf had already been removed. Second weekend made the same trip but it didn’t rain, and again plenty of goodies. On the final weekend I hit “paydirt” -
after about 2 hours I hit water some 3 feet down and called over to
another digger who said it was dry where he was. Very shortly after
that I dug a square base and gingerly forked the ground. I could see
the lid face down and when I turned it over I think everyone on the
site must have heard me call out!”
