 8. RIGA BALSAM PONTILLED MEDICINE. 3.6ins tall. Clear/ lead glass, octagonal base, flattened bulbous body with narrowing neck & rolled lip. Embossed ‘HEN/ Y/ PYNE/ WHITE CHAPPEL’ to front, ‘‘GENUINE/ RIGA BALSAM’ to rear. Base pontil. Delightfully crude, body bubbles, amber swirl in neck area. An important, previously

Henry Pyne was a Chemist & Druggist at 11 Whitechapel trading at least as early as 1793. Riga Balsam is now associated with a liqueur but it was first advertised as “efficacious
[sic] in green wounds, bruises, strains and rheumatic complaints”. (1800). Imported loz- enge shaped Riga Balsam bottles with the name embossed to a small seal attached
below the neck are regular favourites with collectors but this is the only known British made bottle.
