I’m humbled given the honour, and trust, dispersing so many important long time collections.
At the beginning of June Richard Nelder & I travelled to Plymouth for ‘round 1’ to assist Garth Morrisons’ daughter Denise, and partner Ian, to clear ‘Garths Gatherings’. A lifetimes passion accumulating bottles, toilets, a truly vast variety/ range of other material - it was absolutely everywhere. Probably the finest collection of coloured and mineral patents from all corners of the UK. Trust me - you’ll be AMAZED! Garth clearly had ‘collectoritis’ badly! As BBR 140 went to print Richard and I returned with two more vehicles for the ‘mop up’. ‘Garth’s Gatherings’ will be dispersed in BBR’s unique way, over a period of years, all offered with ‘no reserve’. Meanwhile, here’s a 4 page ‘taster’...
“You’re all in fer a mineral feast for at least 3 years”, says AB
It is
difficult to
know just where to begin explaining/ presenting Garths truly phenomenal gatherings!
Overall it may be the mineral patents which stand out/
shine when we look back in
three years time when
everything has been
dispersed.
Garth either collected undamaged or ‘as dug’.... very little polished stuff which will delight serious collectors who have become somewhat disillusioned with over zealous ‘cleaning’? Coloured minerals galore - but what else.
It seems obvious Garth had a passion for patents of just
about anything - so probably
50 typewriters, sewing machines, a glorious array of toilet bowls and sinks representing the height of Victorian splendor, cash
registers - and there’s even items which we do not actually know what they are? It’s going to be real fun trying to catalogue certain pieces - and well worth watching BBR for potential additional sales - including a good mid range ‘spread’ of minerals in the October Saturday Elsecar Unreserved offering.
Left: Oops - BBR’s Katie, AB & Clare caught on the loo - or to be more precise three of Garths decorated toilet selection, & there’s sinks, named ceramic cistern pulls, toilet roll holders...
Above: Beers come no finer than this spectacular blue glass, pint, heavily embossed, ‘Batey and Co’, a commemorative ‘special’ (less than handful known) ‘kick starting’ Garths Collection dispersal at the SummerNational, plus one of the decorated toilets!
Above L to R: Four incredibly rare aqua patents: ‘Netherwood & Shaws Patent/ B SHAW/ Huddersfield’, ‘W TRETT/ SUPERIOR/ AERATED/ GEINGER BEER/ YARMOUTH’, ‘SUCLIFFES PATENT/ R MERCERS/ BLACKBURN’, ‘SHIMMIN/ SUNDERLAND.’
