                                Sorting, sifting & collecting
BBR is well practised in dealing with large collections - all the problems & pitfalls entailed: sorting, sifting, collecting/ packing/ unloading/ lotting in/ storing/ preplanning sales. Many vendors write extensive lists - dear Denise numbered everything (espy No1 below), maybe the least valuable bottle in Garths gatherings! We’ve our own meticulous process & others lists are utterly useless to us - impossible to correlate back here. We find items which the family are often unaware about such as the only known ‘Hungarian/ Bitters/ 1848’ which we have sent to America for auction - watch this space!
Below: A FEW of the flat based early narrow necked codds - we’ve found, so far! L to R : 3 6ouncers -1. Codds Patent 18, to reverse ‘Cleaver/ Chemist/ Leicester’. 2. Codds Patent 4, to reverse ‘... Martha Inman Huddersfield’. 3. Codds Patent 4, to reverse ‘Tinker/ Littlewood/ Huddersfield’. 3 10 ouncers - 4. Codds Patent 4, to reverse ‘W Griffith/ Cirencester’. 5. Codds Patent London (no number), to reverse ‘entwined initials? 6. Codds Patent 24, to reverse ‘H North/ Loughboro’.
Above: Six different ‘Spencor Connor’ patents in a row - all mint, none cleaned!
Above: Herewith a unique photograph - a ‘pride’ of valve codds, never captured together before? L to R: sml ‘METROPOLITAN/ BRIXTON’. Lge & sml ‘W & G ROSEVEARE/ BARNSLEY’. 10oz amber lipped ‘JOHN MILES & SON/ ELM BREWERY/ SOUTHSEA’. sml & lge ‘INMAN BROTHERS/ XL/ LEEDS’ - the earliest valve types with 2 retaining intends at base, no lugs.

   Fluoron pot lid
Not a pot lid collector, but in Garths masses - this tiny, 1ins diam. little lid. Never seen one before. Bob Hougthon told BBR: “I've only seen 2 of these lids which contained radium paint - for decorating
hands & faces of clocks &
watches to make them fluoresce
in the dark! Sold by watch and
clock importers, Niehus Brothers
were Wilhelm Johan Niehus (b.
1857 Germany) & Karl Edward
Niehus (b.1864 Germany). The business
was listed in an 1886 directory as 'Dealers in watch materials' operating from 13 Bridge Street, Bristol. The property later re- numbered to 40 Bridge Street & listed in Kelly's 1902 Directory under 'watch & clock importers'. In 1914, the business occupied both 39 & 40 Bridge St & also listed under 'watch & clock makers' & 'tool makers'.
DON’T ASK...
Zillions have emailed, tel’d, & asked basically same two Q’s:
1. “Was there XYZ in his collection?”, or
2. “When will such & such be coming up?”
Afraid it’s just a case of waiting, far too much to pick out/ store, at the drop of a hat!! PLENTY for ALL - offered with NR!
